Ulster Architectural Heritage Society Visit to Garron Tower &Kilwaughter Castle 01 July 2016
'Our visit will be to Kilwaughter Castle which lies about three miles from Larne. The original tower house was four storeys high and was built for the Agnew family who were tax collectors for James V1.The present building incorporates a Scottish style plantation house circa 1622 built by Patrick Agnew. The present Georgian castle was built for Edward Jones Agnew by John Nash in his “romantic castle “style. Later improvements were undertaken by Millar and Nelson in accordance with Nash’s plans. Kilwaughter Castle was occupied by military forces until 1945 and was then abandoned. In 1951 it was bought by a company who stripped it of its lead, woodwork and slates. It was left to decay, and is a building at risk. It is now in the possession of a family who are trying to restore it to its former glory'.
